History Comes to Life!

A costumed Minnesota History Center Actor came to Mankato East Junor High to teach Mrs. Tibben's U.S. History students about the Minnesota Underground Railroad. Students wore costumes and engaged in activities that helped them understand more about the history of slavery in the U.S., President Abraham Lincoln's role in emancipating the slaves during a politically turbulent time, the economic impact of that decision, and the beginning stages of the civil war. Students then learned about the underground railroad and the people who helped slaves escape as well as the people who betrayed them. History came to life as the students imagined themselves in a different place and time in U.S. History.
This event was paid for with Educare Mini Grant funds.

Books & Magazines "Via" the iPads!

Cold weather is upon us and students are encouraged to cozy up to some great reading! East Junior High students have e-resources available to help them utilize the iPad for recreational reading. Students can use the Mackin Via app on their iPads to find a library of good books selected by their media specialist, Mrs. Pischner. Another source of e-books is MyOn Reader which can be accessed through this link or the free MyOn Reader app.
Students who have a public library card can also gain access to dozens of free magazines through the Traverse Des Sioux Library Cooperative. Any student who wants help setting up the Zinio app for access to the magazines should bring his/her library card and iPad to Mrs. Pischner for assistance.
